The Cockpit® Pearl Harbor Antique Lambskin A-2 Jacket

The "Pearl Harbor" portion of this jacket's name is a bit of a misnomer since this jacket is not a reproduction of the standard military-issue horsehide A-2 commonly worn by USAAF pilots at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. Instead, it is an accurate reproduction of the type of A-2s that were custom-made in China for pilots of the American Volunteer Group (the AVG or Flying Tigers). These jackets were made from lightweight lambskin leather and were meant for warm weather wear. The AVG Flying Tigers were originally formed as a volunteer fighting group prior to December 7 1941 so they did not "officially" represent the US Military and their flight clothing was often not official US Military-issue.
This jacket faithfully replicates those custom A-2s from the early 1940s. The "washed" antique lambskin leather is extremely light in weight and very supple, requiring absolutely no break-in period. It features the slim fitting body & sleeves common to A-2s of that era and the lambskin has a variety of subtle scuffs, color variations & range marks to enhance its rustic "weathered" appearance. Other features include a snap-down collar, two exterior cargo pockets with side-entry handwarmers (which was a popular & often requested custom feature since military-issue A-2s from that era lacked any sort of side pockets), three interior pockets, 100% cotton lining, one piece back, knit cuffs & waistband, an embroidered American Volunteer Group "chit" sewn onto the lining (another popular custom feature among AVG pilots), stitched-down epaulets and an antiqued brass zipper.
This is an outstanding A-2 in every way and its light weight makes it a year 'round garment! Color: russet brown. Made in the USA.

The Cockpit® Horsehide A-2
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
In 1930, the original specs for the A-2 jacket called for horsehide: a tough, durable & plentiful (at that time) leather. Today, the Cockpit® still produces a "tough as nails" horsehide A-2 using military-grade horsehide, although the leather is not as commonplace as it was back in the '30s. The horsehide is dyed to a russet brown and features a variety of natural creases, folds & surface graining (these are naturally occurring characteristics and are not flaws in the leather).
Features include a snap-down collar, two exterior cargo pockets (no side-entry handwarmers), one piece back, knit cuffs & waistband, stitched-down epaulets, antiqued brass zipper, and 100% cotton lining. The A-2's styling is universally beloved -- even General Douglas MacArthur (a non-flier) chose to wear a horsehide A-2 -- and its popularity continues to this day. This is a true pilot's jacket that will serve you just as faithfully as it served the AAF pilots of the '30s & '40s! Color: brown. Available in regular & long sizes. Made in the USA.
Note: just like the WWII originals, this jacket has no side-entry handwarmer pockets nor any interior pockets.

The Cockpit® 1942 Repro B-3
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
This "museum quality" reproduction is authentically patterned after the russet colored B-3s that were issued in early 1942. It features the single horsehide front "map" pocket (original WWII B-3s did not have front handwarmer pockets like modern B-3 reproductions have), horsehide covered reinforced sleeves, and horsehide shoulder tabs for attaching officer rank insignia. It also features a vintage label, a USAAF insignia on the left sleeve, horsehide belting straps on the waist for the perfect fit, and horsehide belting straps around the authentic snap-down shearling collar. This is a B-3 any collector or WWII buff would be proud to own and wear, with the same look and fit of the 1942 originals! Color: russet brown. Made in the USA.

The Cockpit® CBI Lambskin A-2
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
The Cockpit® China Burma India Lambskin A-2 commemorates the flyers of the 23rd FG that defended the China-Burma-India theatre during WWII. It features a classic "pin-up" nose art on the back, along with the CBI insignia and the insignia of the American Volunteer Group (the original Flying Tigers). In addition, all the classic A-2 features are here, including snap-down collar, two front cargo pockets with side-entry handwarmers, stitched-down epaulets, storm flap over antique brass zipper, two inside pockets, knit cuffs and waistband, and one-piece back (which is normally not found on a lambskin jacket due to the small size of the hides). The antique lambskin leather will further distress as you wear it to give you that desirable "battle-worn" look. The jacket is lightly insulated and features a satin lining with WWII escape map and WWII "newspaper clipping" and a "pilot ID" for a nostalgic touch. This is a limited edition jacket -- once these are gone, they will no longer be available. Full cut for a slightly oversize fit. Made in the USA.

The Cockpit® ANJ-4 Cold Weather Shearling Jacket

click images to see detail (will open in a new window) |
Standardize for both the USAAF and USN in 1943, the ANJ-4 was the last flight jacket to be made from shearling sheepskin. Designed to replace the aging B-3, the ANJ-4 boasted numerous improvements over the B-3 in warmth, durability and practicality. This stylish waist-length "bomber" jacket features thick sheep wool for warmth, two front cargo pockets, antiqued brass zipper, interior knit cuffs and, as a concession to modern times, side-entry handwarmer pockets (which the originals lacked). It's the ultimate cold weather jacket! Made in the USA.

The Cockpit® 1943 Repro B-15
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
The B-15 became standard issue to the USAAF after 1943, replacing the venerable A-2. After some initial objections to the change, pilots and aircrews eventually embraced the B-15 and recognized its virtues: it was lighter in weight than a leather jacket (while still being warm) and the fur collar reduced neck chafing while scanning the skies for bogeys. The Cockpit® B-15 is a reproduction of the WWII-issue jacket, but is constructed from flight satin nylon with a synthetic fur collar. Other authentic features include leather oxygen mask retention tabs, headset cord loops, two front slash handwarmer pockets, two inside map pockets, pen-pencil holder on left sleeve, inside wind flap, knit cuffs and waistband, fiberfil insulation, and embroidered "Wing & Star" AAF patch on the left sleeve. Imported.

The Cockpit® WWII Tanker Jacket
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
This Cockpit® jacket is an authentic reproduction of the jacket designed in WWII for US tank crews in Europe. If this jacket looks familiar, it's because it was worn by the main cast of the movie "Saving Private Ryan." This jacket is lightweight but warm, due to its wool-blend blanket lining, making it a true three season jacket. Features include: 100% cotton outer shell, knit collar, cuffs and waistband, two front slash pockets, brass zipper, and bi-swing back. Dry clean only. Color: WWII Khaki. Made in the USA.

The Cockpit® Stearman Vest
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
The Cockpit® Stearman Leather Vest is a descendant of the vests worn by the barnstorming stunt pilots of the 1920s and 1930s. Its inspiration came from a resourceful barnstormer who cut the worn-out sleeves off of his leather flight jacket and wound up with a sharp-looking (and practical) leather vest! The vest left the pilot's arms unfettered and offered enough protection from the elements when barnstorming in an open cockpit bi-plane on warm summer days -- while still providing the desired panache of a leather flight jacket!
Our version is considerably more refined than the improvised original and does not require the use of scissors. The vest is constructed from antique lambskin leather and features two front zippered handwarmer pockets, a zippered utility pocket with pen-pencil slots on the left chest, an inside pocket, full front zipper under snap-down storm flap, nylon WWII "escape map" lining, a bit of polyfil insulation for warmth, and a knit waistband. All the style of a leather "bomber" jacket and the ideal garment for temperate conditions. Made in the USA.
